Using rollers, brushes, sponges, and other tools, the oil-based printer’s ink is spread on the metal plate, and an image is created.

Here the painting is finished and the metal plate is ready to be placed on press bed.

Master Printers at Tamarind work the press as the ink from the plate transfers to a roller and then on printing paper.

A finished monotype:  although some ink might be left on the plate and can be printed once more as a “ghost image”, in general, a new painting is created for each printing, and every monotype is an original.
