Original Monotypes
At Tamarind Institute, University of New Mexico, I start the day without planning ahead as to the direction or subject the art will take. I try to keep a spontaneity in my choices. I choose a color palette, then work quickly with paints, brushes, rollers, and other tools to create texture.
See photos of the printing process.
There always is a tension between chaos and order as I play with the shapes and colors and texture over the course of the day. Working in a series allows me to seek a balance and a resolution in the art. And because the oil-based printer’s ink dries quickly, I must find a resolution in a short time. There’s a wonderful feeling of freedom of working “in the moment”, and I experience as close to pure joy as I know.
Each original monotype is printed on white Rives or Arches paper unless noted otherwise, stamped on the front by Tamarind Institute, UNM, 24x18 image size on 30x22 paper. They will be shipped rolled in a mailing tube if purchased from this site.
